THE EFFECTIVENESS OF SAPPAN WOOD SOLUTION (CAESALPINIA SAPPAN L) AGAINST INHIBITORY POWER OF STREPTOCOCCUS MUTANS BACTERIA
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Background: Gingivitis is caused by inflammation involving the gingival tissue but not extending to the alveolar bone, periodontal ligament or cementum. The bacteria that cause gingivitis are gram-positive bacteria, one of which is Streptococcus mutans, which is a cariogenic bacterium. Secang wood contains antibacterial activity and is often used by the community in the form of a decoction to drink in everyday life.
Method: Research is experimental. The samples used were 18 samples which were divided into 3 treatment groups, namely a solution of sappan wood with a concentration of 1%, 5% and 10%, then the One Way Anova test was carried out.
Result: The diameter of the inhibition of the growth of Streptococcus mutans bacteria against a solution of sappan wood (Caesalpinia sappan L) with a concentration of 1% obtained an average diameter of 7.93 mm, a concentration of 5% obtained an average diameter of 8.69 mm and a concentration of 10% obtained an average the average diameter is 10.17 mm, with (p value: 0.000).
Conclusion: Secang wood solution (Caesalpinia sappan L) was effective against the inhibition of Streptococcus mutans bacteria
