Optimizing The Role Of Peers As A School-Based Adolescent Suicide Prevention Effort

Abstract


Suicide is the second largest cause of death among teenagers. Various factors cause teenage suicide, such as biological, psychological, social and economic factors. Social factors and the school environment are one of the causes of teenagers having suicidal thoughts. Bullying, violence, academic demands and conflicts with friends and teachers are threats to teenagers. Before suicidal ideation is usually preceded by depression, sadness, helplessness, and hopelessness. The aim of this community service program is to optimize the role of peers as a school-based youth suicide prevention effort. The activity method is through suicide prevention training with lectures, discussions and demonstrations. Next, early detection of the risk of teenage suicide is carried out. The results of this activity were that the participants consisted of 24 women and 18 men. All students are 10th grade students with an age range of 16-18 years. Knowledge about suicide prevention before training had an average value of 58, while knowledge after training had an average value of 92. Results of early detection of suicide risk using the 19-item Beck Scale for Ideation questionnaire conducted on 246 students who had suicidal ideas Low self-esteem (0-17) was 208 students (84.55%) and high (18-39) was 38 students (15.45%). This community service program has an impact on increasing students' knowledge about suicide prevention and early detection of suicidal ideation so that it is followed up by mentoring from peers and guidance and counselling teachers.
