Welas Asih as a Concept of Compassionate Behavior in Reconciliation

Aldila Dyas Nurfitri

Abstract

Welas asih is a Javanese term that describes the condition of an individual making a conscious effort to accept and love one's existence and those around them in a state of suffering. In the application, someone can assist other people who are not close relatives. Furthermore, welas asih is the basis of Javanese society in giving forgiveness and conflict reconciliation efforts. Forgiveness is one way of resolving conflict because forgiveness is considered a fundamental resolution model and is supported by the community's local culture. This cannot be separated from the various philosophies in Javanese society, which make compassion a guide to life. The concept of compassion is generally used to translate the idea of compassion in Western psychology, which also refers to an individual's ability to feel the suffering of others and the motivation to alleviate or even eliminate this suffering so that an explanation of the concept of compassion in Javanese society will be revealed from a psychological perspective.
